Eduardo Balderas (14 September 1907 – 6 January 1989) was the leading translator of Latter-day Saint scripture and other materials into Spanish. He served as the chief Spanish translator for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) for almost 50 years. Along with Rey Pratt, Balderas was also most responsible for translating the hymns of the LDS Church into Spanish. ==Birth and youth== Balderas was born in Mexico City to José Apolinar Balderas Carranco and María Centeno Guerrero. His family moved to Torreón México when he was a young child. They later moved to El Paso, Texas. It was in El Paso in 1918 that the family joined the LDS Church.〔Conrey Bryson, ("Saints at ‘the Pass’," ) ''Ensign'', December 1991, pp. 67–68.〕 Balderas served as a missionary for the LDS Church in Arizona and California from 1929-1931. He then worked in a lumber yard in Ciudad Juárez and also evenings doing translation work for the LDS Mission office in El Paso, the headquarters of the Spanish-American mission. As part of this later work, in 1934 Balderas began assisting Antoine R. Ivins in translating the ''Doctrine and Covenants'' into Spanish. He had previously worked with Rey L. Pratt on a new translation of the Book of Mormon into Spanish.
